More is different

While going through my river of news today a comment about quality of certain kind of blog posts has caught my eye. Someone was complaining about "Me too" blog posts. These posts contain just a link to original blog post on someone else's blog and essentially nothing more than words "Me too" or "I agree".

The usual comment about such posts is that they are redundant, useless, and that they shall not have been created in the first place.

In my opinion this kind of blog posts, the "Me too" blog posts, have value. When there are enough of them pointing back to the same original blog post, they are valuable, because "More is better" principle applies in a very natural way for the blogosphere. By using "Me too" posts people are voting for valuable posts that they happen to find in the blogosphere. Their "Me too" posts with trackback links are making valuable posts more visible. A win-win situation.
