NetCabin

Hello, traveller! Welcome to the cabin at the end of the cyber space-time.

Land of lakes

There are a lot of lakes in Seattle area.
To fly over some of them, check out this Virtual Earth video.

Mesh.com

I like Mesh a lot. For two reasons. Log-in and file sharing. Both are seamless. http://www.mesh.com/

Video Killed the Radio Star

Folks, it has happened again!!

From now on, if you want to show the world a good tip or a cool trick on your computer, just go to http://communityclips.officelabs.com and make a video clip.
Instead of writing a lot of text and adding many screen shots, just record a video clip -- show and tell everyone what you are excited about.

Enjoy the ride!

An idea is a lot like a recipe

For making a dish you need (at least):
  • recipe (idea)
  • food (ingreedients)
  • knives, forks, pans, ... (tools)
  • kitchen (workspace)
  • hungry eaters (an interested audience)
  • dinning table (consuming space)
  • cooking knowledge
  • cooking skills
  • time
  • energy
  • motivation

To prepare a good dish, a recipe is required.
While a good recipe can't hurt the dish, there is so much more that needs to go right.
It's possible to cook a good dish even by using a not-so-good recipe.

Thinking more broadly, a good idea to begin with can't hurt the final result.
However, there is so much more that needs to go right.
Right?

Happy cooking! Birthday cake

Snow

Snow season is starting these days.
Some pages to keep on the radar are telefon, Steven's (RSSOTSRoad) and Snoqualmie (RSS, OTS, Road).
Hey, it's a start! Wink

Bob says

Bob sells Ford cars. Yesterday I asked him about Friday holiday discounts.
Nope, he said, this is just for groceries and smaller stuff, not for cars.
They do have an 'end of year' sale for 2007 models, though. Auto

Wintertime Grande Caramel Macchiato

The title is a summary of what you see at a typical Starbucks shop inside a big grocery store.

It sums up quite nicely that the big winter shopping season is starting, that outside is rather cold and that the scene is ripe for some seasonal flavors like eggnog and cinnamon.

Good times!
Enjoy winter!

All the difference

It is beyond words
how good it is
that you are back.

You make
all
the difference.

I like blogging

"I like juggling" is much more powerful than "I must juggle".
In case you can't juggle, try "I'd like to learn juggling" rather than "I must learn to juggle".

Thinking about what you like doing is so much better than thinking about what you think you should or must do.

I like blogging. Hi-5

What is bullshit?

There are three things to keep in mind regarding BS:
  1. Speaking the truth is expected.
  2. Not speaking the truth is lying.
  3. Not caring about the truth while speaking is talking bullshit.
Source: Book "On Bullshit" by Harry G. Frankfurt.

Bullblogs

Reading a book about bullshit made me think about reasons I unsubscribe from some blogs.
Consider a funny definition of a BS presentation I found in the book.
BS presentation is a lot like Texas Longhorn.
Point here, point there and a lot of bull in between.
It works for bullblogs, too.
Bullblog is a lot like Texas Longhorn.
Decent post here, decent post there and a lot of bull in between.
In case you'd like to go deeper into the topic, check out books "Bullshit and Philosophy" and "On Bullshit".

Anonymity

Encarta has a good definition for anonymity.
freedom from identification: the state of not being known or identified by name
Interestingly enough and in relation to post about comments on blogs, it seems that even people who begin posting anonymously on their own blogs eventually become annoyed by anonymous comments there. It appears that what they are after is first attention and later relationship building, which (by definition) excludes anonymity.

Clay Shirky has posted speech transcript where he makes this interesting point:
It's pretty widely understood that anonymity doesn't work well in group settings, because "who said what when" is the minimum requirement for having a conversation. What's less well understood is that weak pseudonymity doesn't work well, either. Because I need to associate who's saying something to me now with previous conversations.
In the long run and on a greater scale anonymity seems to start hindering social part of conversations. In addition to "what is written" it eventually becomes important enough to know "by whom it is written".

Comments

A post about comments on blogs that I have read on Joel's blog is quite interesting.

Since everyone can easily post on their own blogs, it makes a lot of sense to write a post on your blog and link to posts that inspired you or helped you when writing that post. This is a great way for raising quality of discussion and giving better visibility to blog posts that deserve it.

Quality of discussion shall raise simply because number of low quality comments shall decrease. Someone who makes a low quality anonymous comment presumably won't make a low quality post on their own blog.

Visibility of blog posts shall rise because of more people linking to them. Such posts shall have better page ranks and shall be more visible.

Simply complicated

It's sort of amusing and rather harmless to observe a dumb person pretending to be smart.

The opposite is quite annoying: A smart person pretending to be dumb.

Why make life simple if it can be complicated?

Magic words

Please and thank you are the magic words. If you aren't convinced, try using them. They work.

Sorry is a magic word, too. Here's a post I like a lot about word sorry. It describes how mozy.com CEO has used word sorry and I must say I would be very happy to receive such a message, if I were affected by the situation. A very well written message.
